Janssen Pharmaceuticals had their breakthrough drug Risperdal FDA approved in 1993. This drug seemed to be the perfect cure for adults suffering from schizophrenia. While Risperdal was not approved for use in children with schizophrenia until 2007, many patients under the age of 18 still used it because it worked well at relieving the psychotic episodes that they experienced. The result was that a number of adolescent males experienced serious adverse side effects.

Taking Risperdal as a Child

When a male youth takes the drug Risperdal, he is at a greater risk of gynecomastia. As the male body goes through puberty, the hormone levels adjust and change. The body will increase prolactin levels, a hormone that is found in elevated levels in nursing mothers and stimulates breast growth and lactation, but the body generally does not manifest the physical consequences of the increased levels. However, when a youth is taking Risperdal, the dopamine and serotonin receptors are blocked, and the body ends up producing even more prolactin. The result is that male children can start to grow breasts. This condition, if not treated properly, can cause the breasts to become quite large, painful, and in some cases the male can start lactating. The physical effects must be corrected with surgery, but the psychological effects of shaming, shunning, bullying and teasing.

Gynecomastia is not the only severe side effect that many children taking Risperdal experience. In fact, many of the children taking the drug will experience weight gain. One study conducted in 2002 found that almost 43% of adolescents gained more than 7% of their body weight after just 3 months on the drug.

Weight gain is not just a serious problem because heavier children get teased or look different than their peers, but because there are other health issues that accompany it. In 2008 there was a study that looked at several thousand children and how taking Risperdal affected them over the course of a 10 year period. The result was that many of the children gained weight, and those children were at a higher risk of cardiovascular problems and type 2 diabetes.

These serious side effects have been a hot topic lately. Many young adults who took Risperdal as children are noticing that their gynecomastia, weight gain, and other side effects were not normal. Johnson & Johnson is the defendant in a number of lawsuits claiming they marketed the drug without addressing the serious concerns that accompany using the drug, especially when children do. While Risperdal is effective at treating the symptoms of schizophrenia, it comes at a high price to the patient.
