All drugs have side effects. Some are minor, and only persist while the drug is new in the system and the body is trying to adjust. Others are major, and if left unaddressed can have serious long-term consequences. Risperdal is like any other drug in that some side effects can be ignored, and others cannot.

In 1993 Janssen Pharmaceuticals (parent company: Johnson & Johnson) developed Risperdal, an atypical antipsychotic drug, to combat the symptoms of schizophrenia in adults. In 2007, the drug was approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in juveniles ages 10 – 17. 2007 also saw the best year in terms of sales for the drug: $4.5 billion. The cost, however, is the risk of serious side effects.

Risperdal Side Effects

When a patient first starts taking Risperdal they may feel some uncomfortable sensations. Some nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and minor twitching are common. As use of the drug is continued, there are many side effects that are more than uncomfortable, they are downright dangerous. They include:

  • Gynecomastia (breast growth)
  • Galactorrhea (lactation)
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Problems
  • Weight Gain
  • Bone Loss
  • Tardive Dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movement disorder)
  • Pituitary Tumors
  • And many more

These side effects are common enough that they have been determined to be more than just coincidences. One of the worst is gynecomastia in young males.

As a young man goes through puberty, the hormone levels in his body are changing. He may notice that his breasts become slightly swollen. If that young man happens to be taking Risperdal, this occurrence is enlarged. The drug will cause prolactin levels to build in the system, and combined with the natural changes that the body is undergoing, the gynecomastia can be extreme. If left untreated, it can result in galactorrhea, that is, milk production.

The only treatment for gynecomastia is surgery. The breasts may diminish in size, but if they are too large, they will need to be surgically removed. The result is emotional and psychological scars brought on by shaming and taunting. The scars that remain from the breast removal are painful physical reminders of this torment. The result can be devastating to the patient’s mental well-being.
