The past decade has seen a significant increase in the number of men taking supplements for low testosterone. This increase in patients has also led to an increase in the number suffering from severe side effects that accompany this drug. Many men begin testosterone therapy thinking that they will just suffer some of the minor side effects, the ones that will go away after their bodies become accustomed to the drug. Unfortunately, there are thousands that will suffer severe, debilitating, side effects.

Minor Side Effects

Any time something is introduced to the body, there will be side effects. Most patients experience some of the minor side effects that are more irritating than debilitating. With prolonged use, some of these go away without any other changes to diet or medication. When reviewing the drug, these are the side effects listed right on the packaging, or on the websites for the various drugs (for instance Androgel has an important safety information section on each page). These minor, common side effects include:

  • Headaches
  • Prolonged erections
  • Acne
  • Skin irritation, blistering, or rash, especially at the application site
  • High blood pressure
  • Changes in your sex drive
  • Nausea
  • Many others

These side effects are little more than irritating, but could have prolonged effects if they last. However, for the most part the minor, common side effects are not exactly life threatening. But that does not mean they should be ignored. If they do persist, then further treatment is necessary (although often that treatment can be made with a change in diet). But these are not the only side effects that occur with testosterone treatment.

Dangerous Side Effects

There are some patients, after using a testosterone supplement drug, that have died. Those deaths were often brought about by one of the following dangerous side effects:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Stroke
  • Blood clots
  • Liver cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Sleep apnea
  • Jaundice

These severe side effects were not fully disclosed to many of the men who have taken testosterone therapy drugs. However, recent studies, such as one published early in 2014 on the PLOSONE website, show that use of testosterone drugs leads to an increased risk of heart disease. The older the patient, and if he had a previous history of heart problems, the more likely he would be to develop a new disorder during, or after, taking low T drugs.

These side effects are very severe, and they are common enough that the FDA has taken notice. They have launched an investigation to determine whether or not low testosterone drugs are even safe to be on the market. Unfortunately, that does not help the millions of men who have already used them, and are suffering from debilitating side effects.
