The last few years have seen an influx of advertisements for some of the major brands of low testosterone therapy drugs.  The biggest reason for the increase in ads: they work.  Drug manufacturers have found a way to target men who are experiencing the symptoms of low testosterone (whether or not they indeed have low testosterone).  These men will then talk to their doctors and get a prescription for a testosterone supplement drug.  One that costs either them, or their insurance company, hundreds of dollars per month (the average one month prescription is about $400).  This influx in advertisement has led to a huge boom in the testosterone supplement market.

Use of Testosterone Supplements

As men age, their bodies naturally produce less testosterone. As men pass 40 years old, they start to notice that they do not feel as youthful as they once did. Hair begins to fall out, they gain some weight around the mid section, and their muscle mass diminishes. Basically, they feel the effects of aging. However, in an attempt to stay youthful, millions of men will visit with their doctors, and receive a prescription for testosterone therapy. With the relatively new development of topical gel application, more men are willing to try this drug. While the drugs do indeed increase the testosterone levels in the patient, helping to make them feel stronger and have more energy, the drug also comes with some very serious side effects. Recent studies have shown that a patient on a low T regimen is more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke, blood clots, or even death than those who do not take a supplement.

Current Drugs on the Market

Some of the testosterone boosting drugs have been around for many years, such as Testopel which first saw FDA approval in the early 1970’s. However, this drug is administered by implanting a pellet underneath the patient’s skin and thus is not nearly as popular as those applied topically. Many of the newer drugs, like Fortesta Gel that was approved in 2010, are applied via a topical gel. Currently, the majority of the 10 biggest drugs on the market (listed below) are applied as a topical gel.

  • Androgel
  • Androderm
  • Axiron
  • Bio-T-Gel
  • Delatestryl
  • Depo-Testosterone
  • Fortesta Gel
  • Striant
  • Testim
  • Testopel

The sale of these drugs has boosted the pharmaceutical industry immensely. With the sales projected to hit $5 billion by the year 2017.

Testosterone Supplement Market

In the year 2000, there were approximately 1 million prescriptions for testosterone supplements. By the year 2011 those prescriptions had swollen to 5.3 million. With the drugs averaging $400 per month, they are huge money makers for the companies that make them.

Take for instance Androgel. Androgel is manufactured by the company Abbott Laboratories. In 2010, this particular drug brought in $593 million in sales. By increasing their ad campaign, and spending over $80 million on ads, Abbott was able to increase their sales so that the year 2012 saw $1.33 billion in revenues. The revenues for many of the other drugs and their manufacturers all look similar, with the past few years being the biggest money makers. By pushing their drugs, often toward people who do not really need a boost in testosterone but rather a change in lifestyle, these manufacturers are also pushing the possibilities of suffering from severe side effects; side effects that can have lasting complications.
